The SRC Story
Our story begins in the recession of the 1980s when SRC was a small division of International Harvester – who, for the past two years, had been laying off 1,000 employees every week. The Springfield, Missouri factory would be next on the chopping block. With no job outlooks, Jack Stack and the other managers became desperate. To save everyone’s jobs, they scraped together $100,000 and set out to buy the company.
After being rejected for a loan by over 50 financial institutions, Jack finally found a bank to grant them the loan. The final deal is still the worst loan in corporate American history – an $8,900,000 loan with $100,000 in equity.
In his quest, Jack learned the “language of business” and realized it wasn’t that difficult to understand. With an 89:1 debt-to-equity ratio with an 18% interest rate, he needed every employee to understand that meeting their loan payment was critical to their success, how to reach that goal, and that their jobs were at stake if they didn’t. The key was open-book management with the idea that if everyone was working to build a great company, they would be unstoppable.
On February 1, 1983, Springfield Remanufacturing Corp. was born with the vision to do things differently. They explained the company’s financial statements to all the employees and how they impacted those numbers. They created The Great Game of Business® to serve as a tool for teaching business metrics. Soon they had grown to one of the most successful businesses in America, and journalists from all over the world began flying to Springfield, Missouri to learn more about these incredible associates and their unique way of running a company.
Our Companies
SRC (Springfield ReManufacturing Corp.) is comprised of 10 subsidiary companies that make up the oldest employee-owned remanufacturers to OEM’s in North America.
For over 40 years we have been remanufacturing products for the agricultural, industrial, construction, truck, marine and automotive markets and our success has been based on the success of others.
Our Associates have been leaders in core logistics, disassembly, cleaning, machining, assembly and testing everything from fuel injectors to large off-highway transmissions. We are known worldwide for our practice of Open-Book Management, a unique and well-proven approach to running a company, based on a simple, yet powerful belief; “When employees think, act and feel like owners… everybody wins.”
Open Book Management
Our approach to running a company was developed to help close one of the biggest gaps in business: the gap between managers and employees. We call our Open-Book approach The Great Game of Business. What lies at the heart of The Game is a very simple proposition:
The best, most efficient, most profitable way to operate a business is to give everybody in the company a voice in saying how the company is run and a stake in the financial outcome, good or bad.
Good to Great author Jim Collins says, The whole concept of The Great Game of Business is beautiful –consistency, alignment, and transparency, infused with core values and brought to life with powerful mechanisms. It is inspired and inspiring.
In some ways, we see “business” as incidental to what we do. Our real business is education. We teach people about business and give employees the knowledge and tools help them understand:
What "Winning" in business means
How to track, measure and improve performance
How to share in a self-funding stake in the outcome - to win or lose as a team
Our ultimate goal is to create a business of business people who think, act and feel like owners. Open-Book Management is one of the key components of our approach, though it is only a portion of our overall process.
Meet Our Leadership Team
At SRC, our most powerful asset is our people; whether you're an associate or a customer, at SRC you'll be surrounded by energized, engaged and empowered entrepreneurs. Our Open-Book culture has created a team environment that cannot be matched. Since our employees are also company owners, our people take work seriously.
We aim to build the best team, produce the best product and do business with the best customers.
